Pikes are basically specialist anti-spear formations, trading flexibility for the head on head to head matchup. The correct 'Empire equipment is weird and silly' argument isn't 'why no pikes?' but 'why no bayonets?' (Well, that and the standard Warhammer 'that's a mallet not a warhammer' and Total War 'spears should beat swords and axes head on'). Other than differentiating Empire and DoW, part of me suspects they don't use pikes because pewter and lead pikes bend and look horrid, while plastic pikes snap and also look horrid. The actual most pragmatic approach is what the Norscan hunters do, which is to just throw a lot of javelins and rely on keep away. still not exactly ideal but they're more mobile and mobility is really the best armor in a lot of circumstances. Having read the very excellent acoup blog a lot, its kind of funny that one of the things that gets the Empire a lot of flak, not using pikes, ends up being actually sensible, since pikes depend on having a dense, rigid formation and a lot of things in warhammer really gently caress over those kinds of formations. The real life allegory was people fighting war elephants, and the solution there is 'either give some ground without breaking and be willing to suffer rather nasty casualties (as Alexander the Great successfully did), or use long range stuff and get out of the way'. The proper defense against a lot of foes tho is 'do not get hit squarely by this enemy' but given that even a shovel swung at a head is enough to kill someone thru armor as it is, that's nothing fundamentally new to the human close combat experience.ДЄgainst a lot of foes tho, yeah, there's not much difference other than the consistency of paste you wind up as.

I like the focus of the Vortex map and will always play any lord new to me on that map first, but that same focus may also limit your campaign freedom in certain ways and that's what the ME map is good for, I think it helps though to make a goal for yourself like 'kill all the elves', always a good goal imho Was there a time when speedwagon didn't get trolledД®ven discounting super special fantasy ~forging techniques~ like the dwarfs taught the Empire, having some metal plate/chain between your squishy parts and the business end of an orc axe might mean the difference between 'arm broken/dislocated' vs 'arm removed at the shoulder', or 'ribs broken and some internal bleeding' versus 'torso cleaved in half'. Does it really make a difference when there's orks strong enough to lift your horse? I guess it would be helpful against the myriad of weaker opponents and be useless against the rare ones but you'd think there would be a special type of fighter kinda like a slayer meant to take on the stronger enemies that would normally crush through armor. I always wondered how plate works in fantasy settings where there's super strong monster types.
